Part Number of Laptop: what it is and where to find it

With the popularization of computers and notebooks, it is increasingly common to need to perform some type of exchange or replacement, such as batteries, screens and keyboards. After all, minor damage can occur due to accidents or even time of use and in the overwhelming majority of cases it is worth replacing parts. For those who like to carry out repairs on their own, one of the factors that it is necessary to pay attention to is the Part Number.

In this context, one of the points that deserves attention when carrying out repairs is the Part Number, that is, a combination of letters and numbers used by the industry to identify some computer parts.

The Part Number works as an internal and external identification code. Within industries, it contributes to inventory control and manufacturing within standards. In the market, it allows for the correct identification of the part and avoids errors when making repairs and replacements. Using the Part Number, it is possible to ensure the correct and compatible replacement of parts.

This text aims to clarify everything you need to know about the Part Number to avoid errors and ensure safety when carrying out small repairs and replacements.

What is Part Number?

As previously mentioned, the Part Number is an alphanumeric sequence chosen and standardized by computer part manufacturers to identify them. It is a unique code for each part of that specific model.

Within electronic component factories, the Part Number facilitates stock controls and inventories, as well as enabling different companies to produce parts with the same technical specifications.

In other words, the industry relies on the Part Number to produce certain parts while maintaining the same specifications, thus, different suppliers are able to produce the parts.

Outside the manufacturing environment, the Part Number guarantees the compatibility of parts, especially in cases of exchanges and replacements, leaving no room for doubt. Therefore, it is based on the Part Number that it becomes possible to find similar and compatible replacement parts.

In the case of the end consumer, the Part Number can also be useful in finding an appropriate location for technical assistance.

Therefore, before purchasing parts such as computer screens, batteries and keyboards for replacement, check the Part Number, avoiding the risks and headaches of ending up buying the wrong part.

How to find the Part Number?

The first thing to remember when searching for the Part Number of your notebook or any part is that it may appear described as: PN, P/N, part no, or part #. It is usually found on a label and depending on the part, it may be necessary to disassemble the notebook to see it.

In the case of batteries , in addition to the abbreviations already mentioned, the Part Number may also be identified as: Model Number, SKU, P/N, M/N, PA, Replace, Type or Model; or the Part Number may simply not be identified and only the code appears. Normally, the code will be visible or it will be necessary to remove the battery to find it.

It is very common to need to replace a laptop battery, after all, every battery has a certain lifespan, that is, a period of time in which it works well or is fully operational. If the battery has almost no durability when it is not connected to the power outlet, it is a sign that it is time to replace it.

The Windows operating system also usually issues some alerts and this is a function that can be checked in the computer or notebook settings.

In general, when you consider the price of a new laptop and the cost of the battery and labor, it is worth replacing the battery. By replacing the battery, you can ensure that you can use your laptop for longer and be more comfortable, since you will be able to use it without having to be near a power outlet all the time.

When it comes to the keyboard , it is most likely that you will need to remove the keyboard in order to check the part number. The most common cases of needing to replace keyboards are due to accidents with spilled drinks or food, worn keys, dust accumulation, stuck keys or other types of incidents.

As for the notebook screens, it will be necessary to disassemble them – take a good look at whether there are any screws that need to be loosened or whether you can simply unclip them.

Each type of computer may have a different way of removing the screen. Be careful not to damage the notebook when disassembling it. It will usually be necessary to remove the battery, remove the HDD – after loosening the screws with the help of a Torx wrench, the wireless card and the memory stick, and then remove the screws hidden in the memory compartment. The Torx wrench is safer than a screwdriver, because it prevents the screw from wearing out. Then, release the keyboard protector.

In the case of screens, the most common damages are scratches, burnt screens, or even screens that are broken after an accident or fall. As with the battery, it is worth replacing the screens and enjoying your notebook for longer.
